Mrs. Kusaka and Inugami on the way to the town.
When strange incidents involving animal deaths began occurring in her village, knowing what Kabane was, Kusaka out of fear asked Inugami to kill secretly Kabane.
When Inugami arrived, Kusaka met with him and explained the situation, describing how animals had started dying. Fearing that the same might happen to the children, she wanted Inugami to take care of the problem. Later, at the inn, after taking a bath, Inugami requested Kabane’s help instead of Yataro’s. The next day, Kusaka gave Kabane clean clothes and told him to go assist Inugami. In the following days, she was shocked to see Inugami growing closer to Kabane and even helping him in the rice fields, as if he were just another customer.
Later, Inugami shot Kabane, knowing he wouldn’t die, and presented his body to Kusaka, along with the unconscious Yataro. He told her the job was done, the culprit had been dealt with, and that he would take Kabane’s body to dispose of it.[2]
